I’m hitting 40 soon, and looking back, those early PC gaming days were just... different.
I still remember the pure adrenaline of running home from school as fast as I could, just to fire up the family PC. No SSDs, no instant-on—just the sound of the boot-up and that glow of the old CRT monitor in a dark room.
My core memories?
  • GTA 1 (The Demo!): I played that timed demo over and over again. Just driving around that top-down city felt like ultimate freedom.
  • Jazz Jackrabbit 2: The colors, the music, the speed... it was our version of Sonic but better.
  • NHL 97: When those "3D" graphics first hit, we thought it couldn't possibly get more realistic than that. 🏒
Everything felt more "magical" back then. You didn't just download a game; you traded floppy disks or waited weeks for a demo CD from a magazine.
What about you guys?
Who else remembers typing commands in MS-DOS just to launch a game? What was that one game that made you forget to do your homework?
